About Ciloxan

What is Ciloxan?

Ciloxan is a brand of ophthalmic medications that contains the antibiotic ciprofloxacin. Ciloxan products include Ciloxan ointment and eye drops. It works by killing the bacteria causing the infection.

How do I take Ciloxan?

Wash your hands thoroughly before and after applying Ciloxan. Be careful not to touch your eye with the applicator. To apply the drops, tilt your head back and pull down your lower lid with your finger to form a pocket. Put one drop in the pouch and then close your eye for a minute or two. Apply another drop or repeat in the other eye if your doctor has prescribed you to do so. Ciloxan ointment should be applied in the same way. Your doctor will tell you how much ointment to put in your eye. To prevent antibiotic resistance, always finish your full course of treatment.

What if I forget to take a dose of Ciloxan?

If you forget to apply a dose of Ciloxan, apply the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it's already almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue on your regular routine.

What happens if I overdose on Ciloxan?

There are no reports of overdose on Ciloxan. If you think you are using too much medicine, tell your doctor. If someone accidentally ingests Ciloxan, call the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222.

Before taking Ciloxan, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to any antibiotics or any of the ingredients in Ciloxan.

  • You are pregnant or breastfeeding.

  • You wear contact lenses.

  • You are taking any other prescription or nonprescription drugs.

What are the possible side effects of taking Ciloxan?

While using Ciloxan, you may experience burning, itching or blurred vision just after applying the drops or ointment. You may also feel as though there is something in your eye or have an unpleasant taste in your mouth. Tell your doctor if these side effects are severe or don’t go away. Also tell your doctor if your symptoms do not improve or if you have an allergic reaction.

How do I store Ciloxan?

Store Ciloxan ointment or solution at room temperature. Do not allow it to freeze. Keep the medication out of direct light.

Warnings

Conjunctivitis or pink eye is highly contagious. Wash your hands frequently and try not to rub your eyes. Ciloxan is for ophthalmic use only.
