About Ciclopirox

What is ciclopirox?

As an antifungal, the drug ciclopirox prevents the growth of fungus on various parts of the body -- such as your fingernails, toenails, groin, and between your toes -- as well as to treat symptoms of fungal infection, including itchiness, rash, pain, and discoloration or cracking (nails).

How do I take ciclopirox?

This medication is intended for topical use only. It does not available in the form of ciclopirox pills or oral solution and should not be ingested, put in your eyes, or used in any body orifices.

It is usually applied to the affected area (washed and dried) 1 or 2 times daily for as many as 4 weeks depending on the form of ciclopirox you are prescribed, except in the case of the nail lacquer which may take as long as 48 weeks. Always follow your doctor or pharmacist's instructions.

What if I forget to take a dose of ciclopirox?

You should never use extra medication to make up for a missed dose, so skip the missed dose if it's almost time for your next dose. Otherwise, you can apply the medication as soon as you remember.

What happens if I overdose on ciclopirox?

As a topical medication, ciclopirox is not expected to cause significant overdose symptoms.

If this medication has been ingested, call your local poison control center or seek medical assistance.

Before taking ciclopirox, tell your doctor if:

  • You are pregnant or breastfeeding.

  • You have any medical allergies or have had an adverse reaction to another antifungal.

  • You have had or plan to have an organ transplant.

  • You have recently had chicken pox, or have been around someone who has had the chicken pox.

  • You are taking or using any other drugs, medicines, supplements, products, or vitamins, especially if they're topical.

What are the possible side effects of taking ciclopirox?

Common side effects of ciclopirox include redness and mild itching, burning, or irritation at the application site.

Stop using this medication and talk to your doctor if you experience: worsening symptoms, further discoloration of the application site especially finger- and toenails, severe dryness or itching, or unusual or severe burning or irritation at the application site.

Seek emergency medical attention if you believe you're experiencing an allergic reaction, which can cause difficulty breathing, hives, swelling in the face or lips, and swelling in the tongue or throat.

How do I store ciclopirox?

Always store this medication at room temperature and away from excess moisture and heat. Some forms of ciclopirox may need to be used within 8 weeks.

The nail lacquer is flammable, and you should not store the container near open flame. Additionally, you should be cautious when applying the lacquer until it's dried.

Warnings

Avoid getting ciclopirox in your eyes or nose. If this occurs, rinse with water.

Do not stop using this medication before instructed to even if your symptoms have disappeared, as the infection may persist without symptoms.
