About Chloroquine Phosphate

What is Chloroquine Phosphate?

Chloroquine Phosphate is a generic antimalarial and amebicide that comes in tablet form, and it is used for the prevention and treatment of malaria. Patients who will be traveling to an area where malaria is prevalent take this medication to prevent contracting malaria. It is also used to treat amebiasis, an infection of the intestines caused by a parasite.

How do I use Chloroquine Phosphate?

Chloroquine Phosphate tablets should be taken orally with food, as this drug may cause an upset stomach if taken on an empty stomach.

For prevention of malaria in adults, patients are typically instructed to take 1 dose per week on the same day each week, beginning 2 weeks before traveling to an area where malaria is common and then for 8 weeks following your return from the area. If you are unable to start taking Chloroquine Phosphate 2 weeks before you will be traveling, your doctor may tell you to take double the dose of this drug right away. Follow your doctor’s instructions for using this medication.

Adult patients who are taking this drug to treat an acute attack of malaria are typically instructed to take 1 dose of this drug right away, followed by half of that dose 6 to 8 hours later, and then to continue to take a half dose daily for the following 2 days.

For treatment of amebiasis (an infection of the intestines caused by the parasite Entamoeba histolytica), adults are typically instructed to take 1 dose of this drug for 2 days, and then half of a dose daily for 2 to 3 weeks.

What if I forget to use a dose of Chloroquine Phosphate?

Take your missed dose of Chloroquine Phosphate as soon as your remember to take it, unless it is almost time for the next dose. If this is the case, skip the missed dose and resume the regular dose schedule. Do not take 2 doses at once.
