About Cambia

What is Cambia?

The Cambia drug is a central nervous system agent of the NSAID class of medications (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug), and is prescribed to treat migraine headaches, with or without aura. It is taken once the migraine has begun and cannot prevent or cure migraine headaches or reduce the number of attacks. Its effectiveness lies in its ability to block the substances that cause pain and inflammation.

How do I take Cambia?

Cambia is administered as a powder that is dissolved in water. To take the Cambia medicine, empty the contents of the packet into a cup containing one to two ounces of water, stir to dissolve, and drink the entire solution. While the medication can be taken with or without food, taking it with food may diminish its effectiveness. Cambia is not interchangeable with other formulations of diclofenac.

What if I forget to take a dose of Cambia?

Because Cambia is taken after the onset of a migraine, missing a dose is highly unlikely. However, if there is a delay in taking the medication, take it as soon as you are able. If the initial dose is not effective, or the migraine symptoms return a few hours after taking Cambia, contact your doctor for instructions. Do not take additional doses without medical approval.

What happens if I overdose on Cambia?

If a Cambia drug overdose is suspected, contact the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. If the individual has stopped breathing or lost consciousness, contact Emergency Services at 911. Symptoms of an overdose include drowsiness, nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, shallow or labored breathing, or loss of consciousness.

Before taking Cambia, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to diclofenac or any ingredients in the Cambia medicine

  • You have, or have had, heart disease, a heart attack, hypertension, stroke, or blood clot

  • You have, or have had, stomach ulcers or intestinal bleeding

  • You have, or have had, kidney or liver disease

  • You have asthma

  • You have nose polyps

  • You have a clotting or bleeding disorder

  • You smoke

  • You are taking any cold or allergy medications

  • You are taking any NSAIDs, any prescription or non-prescription medications, vitamins, or supplements

  • You are taking blood thinners or diuretics

  • You are taking fluconazole, voriconazole, or cyclosporine

  • You are taking enalapril, amiodarone, moexipril, benazepril, quinapril, captopril, ramipril, fosinopril, lisinopril, trandolapril, perindopril, or other heart or blood pressure medication

  • You are taking lithium, methotrexate, or rifampin

What are the possible side effects of taking Cambia?

Some patients have reported side effects after taking the Cambia drug. Mild side effects include dizziness, gastro-intestinal problems such as an upset stomach, gas, heartburn, bloating, mild diarrhea, constipation, headache, tinnitus, or a mild rash. However, if any of these symptoms persist or worsen, contact your healthcare provider for assistance.

Severe side effects may result from taking the Cambia medicine. Contact your doctor immediately if you experience signs of an allergic reaction (swelling of the face, mouth, lips, tongue, or throat), swelling of the extremities, difficulty breathing, inability to urinate, sudden numbness, slurred speech, fever, coughing or vomiting blood, stomach pain, rapid weight gain, bloody or tarry stools, chest pain, or signs of jaundice.

How do I store Cambia?

Keep Cambia in its original packaging, away from the extremes of temperature and humidity, and out of the reach of children. Use a packet as soon as possible after opening. Dispose of any unused or expired doses according to the instructions of your pharmacist.

Warnings

Contact your doctor if you become pregnant while taking Cambia. This medication may increase the risk for heart attack or stroke. Cambia may cause stomach ulcers, intestinal bleeding, or holes in the stomach or intestines. Smoking can exacerbate side effects, and alcohol intake should be limited while taking this medication.

Brand Names

Cambia is one of the brand names of the medication diclofenac, and other brand names include Cataflam, Zorvolex, Voltaren, Zipsor, and Voltaren XR. However, each of these formulation is used for specific conditions, and the medications are not interchangeable. To help with keeping the Cambia cost manageable, FamilyWize monitors the Cambia price in your area and provides a Cambia discount card in the form of a Cambia coupon.
