About Calcitrene

What is Calcitrene?

Calcitrene is a topical ointment containing calcipotriene, a synthetic vitamin D3 derivative that is prescribed to treat psoriasis. It works by controlling the red, scaly patches associated with this condition. It does not cure psoriasis.

How do I take Calcitrene?

Calcitrene is administered as a topical ointment that is applied once or twice a day depending on the condition being treated and the medical profile of the patient. Thoroughly wash and dry your hands before and after using this medication, unless this is the area being treated. To apply, squeeze a small amount onto the affected skin and gently massage it in. Do not use the ointment on your face or vagina. Do not let the ointment come in contact with your eyes.

What if I forget to take a dose of Calcitrene?

If you forget to apply your scheduled dose of Calcitrene, do so as soon as you remember and are able. However, if it is almost time for the next application, skip the missed one and continue with the normal schedule. Do not increase the amount used or the frequency of application.

What happens if I overdose on Calcitrene?

Calcitrene is for external, non-ophthalmic, non-vaginal use. If this medication is ingested, or comes in contact with the eyes or vagina, contact the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. If the individual has stopped breathing or lost consciousness, contact Emergency Services at 911.

Before taking Calcitrene, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to calcipotriene, other medications, or any of the ingredients in Calcitrene

  • You are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or are nursing a child

  • You are taking any medications, vitamins, or supplements

  • You have elevated levels of, or are allergic to, Vitamin D

  • You have any allergies

  • You have, or have had, any medical condition

What are the possible side effects of taking Calcitrene?

Some patients have reported an increased irritation of the treated or surrounding area, or symptoms of an allergic reaction after using Calcitrene; if these appear, seek medical help immediately. Mild side effects that require monitoring include worsening of the condition, dry skin, itching, burning or stinging, and redness. If these persist or worsen, contact your healthcare provider.

How do I store Calcitrene?

Keep Calcitrene sealed in its original tube, out of the reach of children and away from heat, moisture, and light. Do not allow the ointment to freeze. Dispose of any unused or expired amounts according to the instructions of your doctor or pharmacist.

Warnings

Calcitrene is not recommended for use on children under 18. Excessive use of this drug can raise levels of serum calcium. Avoid prolonged exposure to sunlight while using Calcitrene. Contact your doctor if you become pregnant while using this medication.

Brand Names

Calcitrene is a brand name of the drug calcipotriene and is also marketed as Dovonex, Sorilux, and Calcipotriol. However, these medications should not be substituted for each other without medical permission, as their formulations and treatment purposes differ. To control Calcitrene costs, price-reducing coupons can be printed or downloaded from the FamilyWize website; you can use one of these coupons to receive savings of up to 52% at area pharmacies.
