About Augmentin

What is Augmentin?

Augmentin is a combination medication including amoxicillin and clavulanate potassium (a beta-lactamase inhibitor), and is an oral antibiotic. It is derived from penicillin, making it an analog of ampicillin. While Augmentin uses are only the treatment of diseases causes by bacteria, Augmentin ES-600 is specifically for pediatric patients with certain recurring illnesses. The addition of clavulanate potassium is to assist in fighting antibiotic resistant bacteria.

How do I take Augmentin?

Depending on what your doctor is treating, your age and weight, and your medical history, your doctor will determine your dose. For Augmentin XR and Augmentin ES-600, doses are taken 2 times daily at 12 hour increments. Never crush, chew, or break your XR capsules; always swallow them whole with a full glass (8ox) of water. The ES-600 is a powder for oral suspension; mix as instructed by your doctor or pharmacist, and measure your doses using a medicine dosing cup or spoon.

Augmentin standard release or chewable immediate release medicine may be taken 2 times daily 12 hours apart, or up to 3 times daily 8 hours apart. Do not chew or break your standard pills. Chewable pills must be chewed completely before swallowing. Take both with a full glass (8oz) of water.

Always take your medicine at the same time every day in order for it to be the most effective. To avoid stomach upset, you may take this medication at the beginning of a meal. Do not stop taking your Augmentin before intended, even if you feel better. It will increase your risk of getting sick again, or developing antibiotic-resistant illnesses.

What if I forget to take a dose of Augmentin?

Take your dose as soon as you remember it, unless it's time for your next dose. If so, then you must skip the missed dose.

Do your best to not forget your dosing schedule -- missed doses increases the risk of remaining ill or developing antibiotic-resistant illness.
