About Androgel

What is Androgel?

Androgel is classified as an androgen and is used as replacement therapy for men who suffer from low testosterone due to hypogonadism (reduced production or absence of endogenous testosterone). It is available in two strengths, Androgel 1% and Androgel 1.62%. The Androgel cost is not significantly affected by its formulation and is available only by prescription.

How do I take Androgel?

Use an Androgel Savings Card or our printable Androgel coupon to reduce the price when you fill your prescription. Androgel is a topical medication available in single use packets or tubes, or in a multi-pump dispenser. If your dosage in in the packet or tube, open and use only the number prescribed by your doctor. If you are using the pump dispenser, your doctor or pharmacist will review how many times to depress the pump to receive the proper dosage. Each pump dispenser has a specific number of doses; dispose of the container once this number has been reached, even if there is still product in the dispenser.

Androgel should be applied to the skin daily, at the same time each day, according to the instructions of your physician. It is best applied by placing the prescribed amount in the palm of the hand and rubbing it into the skin. Wash hands thoroughly after application.

Androgel 1% can be applied anywhere on the abdomen, shoulders, and upper arms (but in no other locations). If you have been prescribed Androgel 1.62%, apply it ONLY to the shoulders and upper arms.

Shower or bathe and completely dry off before applying Androgel; do not shower, bathe, or go swimming for five to six hours after applying this product. Allow the medication to dry before covering the area with clothing.

What if I forget to take a dose of Androgel?

If you forget the scheduled dose of Androgel, and you are not scheduled for another dose for twelve hours or longer, apply the missed dose as soon as you remember. However, if the next dose is due in fewer than twelve hours, skip the missed one and resume the normal schedule. Do not apply a double dose of this medication.

What happens if I overdose on Androgel?

In the event of an overdose, Androgel patient assistance is available by contacting Poison Control immediately at 1-800-222-1222. If the individual has stopped breathing or collapsed, contact Emergency Services at 911. The signs of an overdose include feeling faint, difficulty speaking or slow or slurred speech, and weakness in the limbs.

Before taking Androgel, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to testosterone;

  • You are allergic to any medications;

  • You are allergic to alcohol products;

  • You are taking any medications (prescription and non-prescription), vitamins, supplements, and herbal products, or plan to take any;

  • You have sleep apnea;

  • You are taking anticoagulants;

  • You are taking oral or inhaled steroids;

  • You are taking topical steroids;

  • There is a family history of prostate cancer, you have been told you may have prostate cancer, or you have an enlarged prostate;

  • You have diabetes;

  • You have heart, liver, kidney, or lung disease;

  • You have breast cancer.

What are the possible side effects of taking Androgel?

There are several side effects associated with the use of Androgel, some more severe than others. Less severe side effects include dry skin, acne, hair loss, decreased sexual desire, breast enlargement, breast pain, mood changes or depression, headache, watery eyes, and weakness. Contact your physician if these or any other symptoms appear and linger or increase in severity.

More serious side effects include breathing problems (especially while sleeping); swelling of the extremities; frequent erections or erections that last too long; problems with urination (including a sense of urgency, increased frequency, a weak stream, or difficulty urinating); changes in skin color or tone; and nausea or vomiting. If you experience any of these, or other unfamiliar symptoms, contact your doctor immediately.

How do I store Androgel?

Store Androgel in its original container, tightly sealed, and out of the reach of children. Keep this medication away from extremes of temperature and humidity. Do not expose to open flame. Dispose of any unused or expired medications according to the recommendations of your pharmacist.

Warnings

Androgel is flammable, therefore do not smoke while applying it and stay away from open flames until it has dried and been fully absorbed. Do not apply Androgel to the penis or scrotum; apply this medication only to the prescribed areas, and do not apply this medication over open cuts or sores. Before any direct skin-to-skin contact with others, wash the area of application thoroughly with soap and water to remove any residual testosterone; if there is skin-to-skin contact with another person, immediately wash the area of contact with soap and water. Women and children should avoid contact with unwashed and unclothed application sites. Women should not take this medication, especially if they are pregnant as testosterone may harm a fetus.
