About Amicar

What is Amicar?

Amicar is the drug aminocaproic acid, a member of the hemostatic class of drugs that works by slowing blood clot breakdown. It is prescribed to control the bleeding caused by rapidly deteriorating blood clots following different types of surgery, certain bleeding disorders, prostate, cervix, lung, or stomach cancer, abruption of the placenta, or urinary tract bleeding following kidney, prostate, or cancer surgery. It is not prescribed to treat bleeding with other causes.

How do I take Amicar?

Amicar is prescribed as either a tablet or liquid, and is taken orally without regard to food; the tablet may be taken with water. When prescribed to control bleeding, it is typically taken once an hour for eight hours or until the bleeding is under control. If prescribed for ongoing bleeding, it is usually taken every three to six hours. However, the dosing schedule and strength of medication will be determined by your doctor and will depend on the condition being treated and your medical profile. When taking the solution, shake it thoroughly before dispensing. Follow the dosing instructions exactly. You doctor may alter the prescription over time, if necessary.

What if I forget to take a dose of Amicar?

If you forget to take your scheduled dose of Amicar, take it as soon as you remember and are able. If the time is near for the next scheduled dose, however, skip the missed one and return to the recommended regimen. Do not alter the amount taken or change the dosing schedule to make up for the one missed.

What happens if I overdose on Amicar?

If it is thought that an Amicar overdose has occurred, contact the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. If the individual has stopped breathing or lost consciousness, contact Emergency Services at 911. An overdose may cause seizures.

Before taking Amicar, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to aminocaproic acid or any of the ingredients in the Amicar medicine

  • You are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or are nursing a child

  • You are taking any prescription or non-prescription medications, vitamins, or supplements

  • You have, or have had, blood clots
