About Alprostadil

What is alprostadil?

Alprostadil is a prostaglandin vasodilator prescribed to treat erectile dysfunction. It works by relaxing blood vessels to increase blood flow to the penis in order to achieve and maintain and erection. It may also be used with other medications to diagnose erectile dysfunction.

How do I take alprostadil?

Alprostadil is administered one of two ways. As a powder, it is mixed with an accompanying liquid for injection into the penis; as a transurethral suppository, or pellet, it is inserted into the urinary opening of the penis; there are no alprostadil pills. The injection should not be administered more than three times a week with at least 24 hours between each dose. The pellets should not be used more than twice in 24 hours. The initial dose of alprostadil will be administered in a doctor’s office in order to determine the correct dosage, demonstrate proper use, and to monitor for side effects.

What if I forget to take a dose of alprostadil?
