About Mupirocin

What is mupirocin?

Mupirocin is a topically applied antibiotic used to treat bacterial skin infections. Mupriocin is a powerful antibiotic that kills the bacterium Staphylococcus aureus. Some infections treatable with mupirocin include boils and impetigo, a skin infection common among preschool children and those who participate frequently in contact sports. It works by inhibiting protein synthesis in the Staphylococcus aureus bacterium which prevents growth and leads to the termination of the infection.

How do I take mupirocin?

You can buy mupirocin in your local drugstore or pharmacy with a prescription from your doctor. Mupirocin comes in a tube as a cream or ointment. It is usually recommended to be used three times a day for one or two weeks. Follow instructions given to you by your doctor. Wash and dry the affected area and your hands before applying the medication. Apply a small amount of cream or ointment to cover the area of the infection. Rub the medication until it is distributed evenly. Cover the infection with gauze or a badge for faster healing and to avoid wiping the medication off. Wash your hands again after applying. Use mupirocin for the entire time that is recommended by your doctor. If you stop using the medication too early, the bacteria may become resistant to the antibiotic and return.

What if I forget to take a dose of mupirocin?

Apply the missed dose as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, apply the medication and skip the missed dose. Do not apply two doses at once.

What happens if I overdose on mupirocin?

An overdose of topical mupirocin is rare and not likely. If mupirocin is applied excessively, side effects will be more prominent and severe. If mupirocin is swallowed, contact the Poison Control Center immediately at 1-800-222-1222.

Before taking mupirocin, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to mupirocin or any other ingredients in this medication.

  • You are taking any other drugs or supplements, especially chloramphenicol or other antibiotics.

  • You are pregnant or breast feeding.

What are the possible side effects of taking mupirocin?

Possible side effects from using mupirocin include stinging, itching, burning and rash. Call your doctor if these side effects occur and do not go away. Another side effect that may occur is dry skin around the affected area. This is a harmless and normal side effect.

How do I store mupirocin?

Store mupirocin at room temperature between 68 and 77 degrees Fahrenheit. Keep this medication away from children and pets and throw away any expired medication.
