About Diovan

What is Diovan?

Diovan, or valsartan, is an angiotensin II blocker that is used to regulate high blood pressure. This medication is often prescribed when a patient is intolerant to ACE inhibitor blood pressure medications. Diovan may also be used to treat heart failure after a heart attack. Diovan works by blocking angiotensin II receptors which results in vasodilation, or the widening of blood vessels. It also reduces the secretion of vasopressin, a hormone that causes the blood vessels to constrict and the body to retain water. Additionally, Diovan reduces the production of aldosterone, a hormone that causes the body to retain sodium. All of these effects reduce blood pressure in the patient.

How do I take Diovan?

Use your Diovan copay card or your Diovan coupons or discount card from FamilyWize to purchase your medication at your local pharmacy. Diovan comes as a tablet to be taken orally once per day to treat hypertension. Your doctor will prescribe a daily dose between 80-320mg. Dosage times and sizes may be different for heart failure. It will take a couple of weeks for Diovan to achieve its maximum benefit. If a sufficient reduction in blood pressure hasn’t been obtained after four weeks, talk to your doctor. This medication may be taken with or without food and may be used concurrently with another blood pressure medication prescribed by your doctor.

What if I forget to take a dose of Diovan?

If you forget to take a dose of Diovan, take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it’s almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue on your regular schedule. Do not take a double dose or consecutive doses to make up for a missed one.

What happens if I overdose on Diovan?

Signs of overdose on Diovan include hypotension or low blood pressure, depressed breathing, low consciousness level or unresponsiveness, and shock. If you think you or someone you know has overdosed on Diovan, contact the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. If the victim is unresponsive or not breathing, call 911.
