About Ciprodex

What is Ciprodex?

Ciprodex is made of two different medications, ciprofloxacin and dexamethasone, and is used to treat infections in the ear. Ciprofloxacin is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic that is used to treat a variety of bacterial infections resulting from both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. It works by inhibiting DNA gyrase enzymes that are necessary for bacterial cell division. This stops the spread of the infection. Dexamethasone is a steroid medication that has anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressant effects. It is used in Ciprodex to stop inflammation and ease pain.

How do I take Ciprodex?

Ciprodex comes in a dropper bottle and may be purchased from your local pharmacy. The bottle should be warmed for one or two minutes in your hand before using to avoid any dizziness that might be caused from dropping a cold liquid into the ear. Shake the bottle well before each use. The typical dosing instructions for Ciprodex are four drops into the affected ear twice daily for seven days. Follow your doctor’s instructions for your particular condition. Lie down or tilt your head sideways with the affected ear facing upward to administer the medication. After placing the drops into the ear, push the tragus (the pointed cartilage of the ear that is closest to the face and above the earlobe) five times to allow the liquid to penetrate the ear. Remain with the infected ear facing upward for about 60 seconds. Then change sides if necessary. This medication is for the ears only and is not meant to be used orally or optically.

What if I forget to take a dose of Ciprodex?

If you miss a dose of Ciprodex, take the missed dose as soon as you remember it. However, if it’s almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue on your regular schedule. Do not apply a double dose to compensate for a missed one.

What happens if I overdose on Ciprodex?

There are currently no reports of overdose or adverse effects from excessive use of Ciprodex. If you or someone you know swallows Ciprodex, call the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222.

Before taking Ciprodex, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to quinolone antibiotics or any of the ingredients in Ciprodex.

  • You are pregnant or breastfeeding.

  • You have an ear infection caused by a virus.

  • You are taking prescription or nonprescription medications, especially other antibiotics, other steroid medications, some antidepressants, and medications for schizophrenia.

What are the possible side effects of taking Ciprodex?

Possible side effects from using Ciprodex include ear discomfort, itching, and an unusual taste in the mouth. Rare but possible dangerous side effects include skin rash, ear drainage or discharge, and worsening pain. If you experience an unusual or dangerous side effect, contact your doctor at once.

How do I store Ciprodex?

Store Ciprodex tightly closed in its container at a room temperature between 59 and 86 degrees Fahrenheit. Protect this medication from light and keep it out of reach of children.

Warnings

Some quinolone antibiotics like ciprofloxacin have been known to cause ruptured tendons in rare cases. This is even less likely to occur with an otic medication like Ciprodex. Signs of rupture include extreme acute pain in a tendon and a change in its appearance. Ask your doctor about caffeine consumption while taking this medication.
