About Abreva

What is Abreva?

Abreva (docosanol) is a topical antiviral cream used to treat cold sore outbreaks on the face and lips that result from the herpes simplex virus. It shortens the length of time needed to heal, and helps the outbreak end faster.

How do I take Abreva?

Use this medication exactly as prescribed by your doctor, or according to the instructions on the medication packaging. Do not ingest. For best results, apply this medication as soon as you experience the signs of a cold sore (e.g., bump, itch, redness, tingling).

Always wash your hands before applying Abreva. Make sure your face is clean and dry, and you are not wearing any cosmetics. Apply just enough cream to cover the cold sore area and rub in gently 5 times per day every day for 5 days. If the sore is not healed or gets worse in 10 days, see your doctor.

If your medication is washed off for any reason, reapply immediately. This medication will dry clear. Once it is dry, you can apply makeup over your cold sore, but be careful that none of the medication is removed.

What if I forget to take a dose of Abreva?

You may apply the missed dose of Abreva medicine as soon as you remember it. Apply the next dose on time, but never apply a double dose to make up for a missed dose.

What happens if I overdose on Abreva?

Because this is a topical cream used to cover a small location, overdose is unlikely. However, if you suspect a problem, or if Abreva has been ingested, call your local poison control center or seek medical assistance.

Before taking Abreva, tell your doctor if:

• You are pregnant or breastfeeding or plan to become pregnant or to breastfeed. • You have sores that are not on the face or lips. • This prescription is for someone under the age of 12. • You have any reason that prevents you from abstaining from certain forms of intimate contact. • You have had an allergic reaction to other topical antiviral medications. • You are currently taking any other drugs, medications, or supplements.

What are the possible side effects of taking Abreva?

While headaches have been reported as a potential side effect, there are no definitive side effects connected to Abreva. If you experience signs of an allergic reaction, discontinue application and seek emergency medical assistance immediately. Symptoms of allergic reaction include: rash or hives with itchiness, swelling in the face and lips, swelling in the tongue or throat, or difficulty breathing.

How do I store Abreva?

Store at room temperature and away from excess light or heat (e.g., a bathroom). Never allow this medication to freeze.

Warnings

Abreva medicine can only treat the symptoms of your infection, and is not a cure. Avoid certain kinds of intimate contact (e.g., kissing), and do not share your medicine, as this may spread the infection.

Use a separate applicator when applying lipstick or other makeup over your cold sores to prevent sharing the infection or re-infecting yourself. Do not get this medication in your eyes or mouth. If you do, rinse immediately.

If your cold sores have not healed or get worse within 10 days of starting to use Abreva, refer to your doctor.

Brand Names

While there is a generic name for Abreva -- docosanol topical -- a generic is not available on the market. There are no other brands of this formulation of topical cream. Fortunately, that doesn't impact the Abreva cost for you, and you can save even more by taking advantage of our free Abreva coupon.
