About Abilify

What is Abilify?

Abilify is an antipsychotic drug and a partial dopamine agonist that is used to treat schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, and sometimes autism. When used to treat depression, it is usually prescribed as a supplement to other drugs that have stopped working on their own. Unlike other antipsychotic medications that suppress or inhibit dopamine receptors, Abilify regulates hyperdopaminergic states while still maintaining the normal function of dopamine. A common theory of one of the causes of schizophrenia and psychosis is the over activity of dopamine in the brain due to extra D2 receptors. By regulating dopamine, Abilify is able to control some of the symptoms of schizophrenia as well as bipolar disorder, depression, and autism.

How do I take Abilify?

Take advantage of patient assistance with your Abilify Savings Card, discount card, or coupons from FamilyWize to buy your medication at a reduced cost in your local pharmacy. Abilify comes in the form of a tablet or orally disintegrating tablet. It may also come as a liquid to be taken orally or solution to be injected. The recommended daily dose of Abilify is between 10-15mg daily and should be taken once a day. Smaller doses are recommended for younger patients. Your doctor may start you off on a lower dose of medication and slowly increase it. Follow your doctor’s recommendations for your particular condition. Abilify may be taken with or without food and should be taken at the same time every day.

What if I forget to take a dose of Abilify?

If you miss a dose of Abilify, take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it’s almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue on your regular schedule. Do not take a double dose of Abilify to compensate for a missed dose.

What happens if I overdose on Abilify?
