5 Holiday Eating Tips for People With Diabetes
November marks National Diabetes Month, highlighting diabetes and its effects on millions of Americans. With the holidays just around the corner, people living with diabetes can be faced with some challenges.
Below are five tips that may help those with diabetes safely navigate their festivities, and enjoy a fun and healthy holiday season!
Make a Healthy Eating Agreement
Before a big meal, think carefully about how you will eat that day and write down some goals. Sign and date the "agreement" you have made with yourself and post it on your refrigerator to hold yourself accountable.
Plan Your Meal Plate
Half of your plate should include vegetables like carrots, green beans or broccoli. Then evenly split the other half between starches like potatoes, rice pilaf or quinoa, and lean meat like turkey or chicken. Try to avoid dark meat and remove any skin. If gravy is a must, use just a little!
Limit or Avoid Alcohol
Check with your doctor to find out if alcohol will interfere with any of your medications. If it's safe for you to drink, do so in moderation. Limit yourself and avoid mixed drinks, which have more carbohydrates.
Be Physically Active
If you can't maintain your normal exercise routine, get the family out for walks, fun runs or games of flag football or tag. This will get you moving, and allows for healthy quality time with friends and family!
Bring Extra Meds When Traveling
If you plan to be gone for a week, pack two weeks' worth of diabetes medications and supplies in case of travel delays. Be sure to carry your prescription slip in case of an emergency. Also keep your medications and supplies with you on flights!
Live Healthy. Live Smart.
Health insurance is important for those with diabetes to help them access and afford medications and supplies.
