About Zioptan

This medicine is a prostaglandin used to treat open-angle glaucoma and increased pressure in the eye (ocular hypertension).

Follow the directions for using this medicine provided by your doctor. AN ADDITIONAL PATIENT INFORMATION LEAFLET is available with this medicine. Ask your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist any questions that you may have about this information. USE THIS MEDICINE IN THE EVENING unless your doctor tells you otherwise. Do NOT open the pouch containing this medicine until you are ready to use the eye drops. TO USE THIS MEDICINE IN THE EYE, first, wash your hands. Tilt your head back. If you are unable to tilt your head, lie down. Using your index finger, pull the lower eyelid away from the eye to form a pouch and look up. Drop the medicine into the pouch and gently close your eyes. If a drop misses your eye, try again. Immediately use your finger to apply pressure to the inside corner of the eyelid for 1 to 2 minutes. Do not blink. Remove excess medicine around your eye with a clean, dry tissue, being careful not to touch your eye. Wash your hands to remove any medicine that may be on them. THERE IS ENOUGH MEDICINE in one container for both of your eyes. Each container of this medicine is intended for a single use only. Use right away after opening. After you have opened the container and used it, throw away any remaining medicine immediately. Do not save it to use at a later time. TO PREVENT GERMS FROM CONTAMINATING YOUR MEDICINE, do not touch the applicator tip to any surface, including the eye. USE THIS MEDICINE AT LEAST 5 MINUTES apart from any other medicine that you put in your eye. THIS MEDICINE COMES IN FOIL POUCHES that contain single-use containers. Store unopened foil pouches in the refrigerator, between 36 and 46 degrees F (2 and 8 degrees C). Do not freeze. Write down the date you open the pouch in the space provided on it. After the pouch is opened, the single-use containers may be stored in the open foil pouch at room temperature, between 68 and 77 degrees F (20 and 25 degrees C). Store away from heat, moisture, and light. Do not store in the bathroom. Throw away any unused containers in the opened foil pouch after 28 days. KEEP THIS MEDICINE out of the reach of children and away from pets. CONTINUE TO USE THIS MEDICINE even if you feel well. Do not miss any doses. IF YOU MISS A DOSE OF THIS MEDICINE, use it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not use 2 doses at once.

If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately.

Some medicines or medical conditions may interact with this medicine. INFORM YOUR DOCTOR OR PHARMACIST of all prescription and over-the-counter medicine that you are taking. Tell your doctor if you are using any other eye medicines. DO NOT START OR STOP any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval. Inform your doctor of any other medical conditions, including if you have or have had redness, swelling, infection, or injury of the eye, inflammation in the eye (eg, iritis, uveitis), or other eye problems; allergies; pregnancy or if you are able to become pregnant; or breast-feeding. Tell your doctor if you will be having eye surgery. Use of this medicine in CHILDREN is not recommended. Discuss with your doctor the risks and benefits of giving this medicine to your child. Contact your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions about taking this medicine.

SIDE EFFECTS that may occur while using this medicine include blurred vision; changes in eyelash growth or color; cold symptoms; cough; dry eyes; eye irritation, itching, redness, or stinging; or headache. If they continue or are bothersome, check with your doctor. CONTACT YOUR DOCTOR IMMEDIATELY if you experience darkening of the eyelid or eye color; difficult or painful urination; eye or eyelid discharge, swelling, irritation, or pain; redness or swelling of and around your eye; or vision changes (eg, sudden loss of vision). AN ALLERGIC REACTION to this medicine is unlikely, but seek immediate medical attention if it occurs. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; or swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue.
