What is Ethosuximide?

Ethosuximide is a generic anticonvulsant drug that comes in capsule and liquid syrup form, and it is used to control absence seizures, or petit mal seizures. Petit mal is a type of seizure during which the person having the seizure experiences a very short loss of awareness. During the seizure, the person may stare straight ahead or blink his eyes and not respond to other people. This drug works by reducing abnormal activity in the brain.

How do I use Ethosuximide?

Ethosuximide capsules and liquid syrup are to be taken orally, and this medication is typically prescribed to be taken one or more times per day. Follow your doctor’s instructions carefully for using this medication.

Do not stop taking this medication without first consulting with your doctor, even if you experience side effects such as unusual changes in behavior or mood, as stopping this drug suddenly may cause your seizures to worsen.

What if I forget to use a dose of Ethosuximide?

Take your missed dose of Ethosuximide as soon as your remember to take it, unless it is almost time for the next dose. If this is the case, skip the missed dose and resume the regular dose schedule. Do not take 2 doses at once.
